We are essentially the convenient bogey-man/woman. Preachers have been blaming natural disasters on us for years now. Nearly all cultures have used the belief in an entity that intends harm as a motivator for their populace. The devil isn't terribly tangible or current but we are. We're being used to help churches grift from there worshipers as well as politicians who grift from their constituents.
